Core concepts you should know

Four concepts that explain how Extrack thinks.

On this page

Extrack rests on four concepts: accounts (where your money lives), transactions (Expense / Income / Transfer kinds), categories (what you spent on) and people (who is involved). Lending is layered on top — Expense + person + split creates a per-person receivable. Master these four and every screen makes sense.

Accounts

Anything that holds money is an account. Bank, credit card, loan, investment, cash. Balances are derived from transactions, never typed in directly after the opening balance.

Transactions

Every movement of money. Three kinds: Expense (money leaves your books), Income (money lands), Transfer (between your own accounts). Lending uses Expense + person + split.

Categories

Multi-select buckets that classify what you spent on. Power Budgets and Reports. The system "Unknown" category catches uncategorised rows.

People

Who is involved. Tagging a person on a split or lend creates a per-person "{Name}'s Lent" receivable; the People page shows everyone with a non-zero balance.

Frequently asked

Do I need to know accounting to use Extrack?
