How to split an expense with people (Splitwise-style)
Add people, set up split, allocate via 4 modes. IOUs post to per-person Lent accounts.
On this page
To split an expense in Extrack, create a new Expense, type the full bill total, then add the participants in the People field (comma-separated names). A "Split this expense?" prompt appears — tap "Yes, set up split". The "Adjust split" tab opens with four modes: Equally, By amount, By % or By shares. Each non-self share posts to that person's "{Name}'s Lent" receivable account when you Create.
Steps
Create a new Expense with the full bill total
Open the New transaction modal, pick Expense, enter the total amount of the bill (including everyone's share), and pick "Paid from".
Add the participants in the People field
The People (optional) field accepts comma-separated names: e.g. "Rahul, Priya, Office Lunch Group". Existing directory names autocomplete; new names create directory entries on save.
Tap "Yes, set up split" when the prompt appears
Once people are added and an amount is entered, a small prompt appears below the People field — "Split this expense?" with "Yes, set up split" and "Not now". Tap "Yes, set up split" — the "Adjust split" tab activates at the top of the modal.
Pick a split mode
The Adjust split tab shows four mode tabs: Equally, By amount, By % or By shares. Pick whichever fits — Equally is fastest; By amount is right when the bill split is uneven; By shares handles "2 nights vs 1 night" style.
Tip — In Equally mode, uncheck "You" to split only among others (you carry no personal share — i.e. you fronted the money entirely).
Enter shares and review the live totals
Each row shows the participant and their share. The footer shows the running total vs the bill total in green when they match, amber when they do not.
Optional: add an off-directory participant
Tap "Add person" at the bottom of the panel to add a free-form name not in your directory.
Tap Create
Extrack posts one stored transaction; the ledger displays one row per receivable (your share posts to its category; each non-self share posts to that person's Lent receivable account).
What happens behind the scenes
A split expense is one stored transaction, displayed as one ledger row per allocation:
- The full amount leaves your "Paid from" account.
- Your share posts to the chosen category (e.g. Food).
- Each non-self share posts to that person's "{Name}'s Lent" receivable account — auto-created the first time you split with or lend to them.
- When that person pays you back, record an Income with their name in People and set up the settle-split — see "How to track lending".
Cents are distributed so the split sums exactly to the total (Splitwise style). No "₹0.01 missing" rounding errors.
Frequently asked
How do I split unevenly?
In the Adjust split tab, pick "By amount" and type each person's exact share. Or use "By %" or "By shares". The running total at the bottom turns green when the shares sum to the bill total.
Does a split create a separate loan account?
Yes — one "{Person}'s Lent" receivable account per person, created the first time they appear in a split or lend. View under Accounts → "Lent" filter pill.
What if I forget to add someone?
Open the row on Transactions and tap the pencil/Edit action. Add them in the People field, accept the split invite again, save. The receivables rebalance.
Does my share count toward my budget?
Yes. Only your share — the non-self shares post to receivables, not categories, so they do not consume budget caps.
I want to split among others only — not include myself.
In Equally mode, uncheck the "You" checkbox. Your personal share becomes zero; the full total is owed back to you by the other participants.
