Buckets that classify spending. Drive Budgets and Reports.

On this page

Categories in Extrack are buckets that classify what each transaction was for — Food, Rent, Transport, Subscriptions, Salary, Refunds. Transactions can carry multiple categories (the field is multi-select). The Categories page rolls totals by a selected "Rollup month" or "Year" and the system "Unknown" category catches any row you saved without picking one.

Where categories show up

Every Expense or Income picks zero, one or more categories. Transfers do not — money moving between your own accounts has nothing to classify. The Categories page shows month/year rollups; per-category caps in Budgets sum just rows tagged with that category; Reports breaks totals down by category.

Frequently asked

Are categories hierarchical?

No — Extrack uses a flat list. Use prefixes if you want grouping ("Food: groceries", "Food: eating out").

How many categories should I have?

Most users settle on 10–20. Too many makes the multi-select picker slow.
