Recurring vs planned — what to use when

Recurring = repeats on a frequency. Planned = one-off scheduled row.

On this page

Extrack has two ways to schedule a transaction. Recurring templates repeat on a frequency — Daily, Weekly, Every 2 weeks, Monthly, Quarterly, Yearly — use for rent, salary, SIPs, subscriptions. Planned items are one-off scheduled rows — use for a specific upcoming bill or known one-time payment. The two pages share the same Due / Upcoming structure but have different row actions.

When recurring wins

Use a recurring template when the same row will happen on a schedule:

  • Monthly rent — same amount, same payee, every 1st of month.
  • Monthly salary — same amount, same account, every payday.
  • Weekly grocery direct debit.
  • Quarterly insurance premium.
  • Yearly subscription renewal.

When planned wins

Use a planned item for one-offs you know are coming:

  • A wedding contribution next month.
  • A planned transfer from savings to investment for a specific date.
  • A one-time gift to a relative.

Frequently asked

Can I convert a planned item to recurring?

Not in one click. Create a recurring template fresh — it is two minutes — and delete the planned item.

Can a planned item override a single recurring occurrence?

The data model allows it (via `recurringTemplateId` + `recurringOccurrenceDate`), but the UI does not currently expose an "Override this occurrence" button. The linkage happens server-side during approval flows.
